Brut was composed for a doll by Michel Nedjar and for the installation “Danse Macabre II” by Allen S. Weiss. My idea was to approach the horror of the Holocaust through the blues (Billie Holiday’s “Strange Fruit”, Odetta) and through the aural traditions alternating singing and mourning. The contrast of these two modes of musical expression seemed to me appropriate to approach “something... that nobody can get rid of...” (H. Arendt). The title of the piece refers both to Nedjar’s “art brut” origins and to what I call “poor electronics”: a music using Lo-Fi sounds, without effects, which may be listen in any audio device. The material comes from recordings, “broken” loudspeakers, vinyl, e-bowed guitar. “Brut” has been premiered at the “In Transit Festival of Performing Arts” 2009 in Berlin.

Το Brut γράφτηκε για μια κούκλα του Michel Nedjar και την εγκατάσταση “Danse Macabre II” του Allen S. Weiss. Βασική ιδέα ήταν η προσέγγιση του Ολοκαυτώματος μέσω των blues (Billie Holiday “Strange Fruit”, Odetta) και της προφορικής παράδοσης: εναλλαγή τραγουδιού-θρήνου. Η αντίθεση αυτών των δύο τρόπων μουσικής έκφρασης μου φάνηκε κατάλληλη για να προσεγγίσω “κάτι... από το οποίο κανείς δεν θα μπορέσει να απαλλαγεί...” (H. Arendt). Ο τίτλος παραπέμπει τόσο στις “art brut” καταβολές του Nedjar όσο και σε αυτό που ονομάζω “poor electronics”: μια μουσική που χρησιμοποιεί Lo-Fi ήχους, χωρίς εφφέ, που μπορεί να ακουστεί σε οποιαδήποτε συσκευή ήχου. Το υλικό προέρχεται από ηχογραφήσεις, χαλασμένα ηχεία, βινύλιο, κιθάρα. Η πρεμιέρα έγινε στο In Transit Festival of Performing Arts 2009, Βερολίνο.
